RDR2 / RedM crash: ERR_GFX_STATE

Fixable on your PC

ERR_GFX_STATE

The game lost track of its graphics state and closed. Usually an outdated driver, the wrong graphics API for your card, an overclock, or a corrupt shader cache.

Why it happens

RDR2 keeps a lot of graphics data in flight at once. If the driver is old, a GPU or RAM overclock isn't fully stable, or the saved shader cache files get corrupted, that data goes out of sync and the game crashes with this error. Rockstar's own fix starts with drivers and switching to DirectX 12.

How to fix it

  1. Update your graphics driver from NVIDIA or AMD's site. If the crashes started right after a driver update, clean install the previous version with DDU instead.
  2. Switch the graphics API. In the game, go to Settings > Graphics, set Advanced Settings to Unlocked, then set Graphics API to DirectX 12 (Rockstar's recommendation). If you're already on DirectX 12, try Vulkan. Save, exit the game fully, and relaunch.
  3. Remove any GPU or RAM overclock, including XMP/EXPO if crashes continue, and close tuning tools before launching.
  4. Delete the shader cache: in Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings, delete the files that start with sga_. The game rebuilds them on next launch. (Your Documents folder may be under OneDrive.)
  5. Disable fullscreen optimization: in your launcher, open the game's install folder, right-click RDR2.exe > Properties > Compatibility, tick 'Disable fullscreen optimizations', and click OK.
  6. Make sure your C: drive has free space, install pending Windows updates, then verify the game files in your launcher.

Still broken?

Do a clean driver install with DDU in Safe Mode. If it still crashes on both APIs, run a GPU stress test to rule out hardware, or book a session and we'll go through it together.
