RDR2 crash: "Failed to allocate memory for Vulkan"

Fixable on your PC

Vulkan memory allocation

The Vulkan renderer couldn't reserve the memory it asked for. Most often caused by a driver issue, an unstable overclock, or leftover processes holding memory.

Why it happens

Vulkan reports memory failures more bluntly than DirectX. Corrupt shader caches, a just-released driver, or an overclock on the memory clock are the usual triggers — not a lack of VRAM.

How to fix it

  1. Reset GPU core and memory overclocks to stock.
  2. Restart the PC (not just the game) so nothing is holding GPU memory. Check Task Manager > Performance > GPU: dedicated memory should be low with the game closed.
  3. Delete the shader cache: in Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings, remove the sga_* files (the game rebuilds them).
  4. Roll back to the previous graphics driver with a clean install if the error began after an update.
  5. Lower Texture Quality one step to rule out genuine VRAM pressure.

Still broken?

Try DirectX 12 instead. If both APIs fail, run a GPU memory stress test (e.g. OCCT VRAM test) to rule out hardware.
