GTA V closes on startup with no error message (Enhanced & Legacy)

Fixable on your PC

0x80000003

You hit Play, the launcher opens, and then the game just disappears. Usually corrupt game files, broken saved settings, the wrong graphics card on laptops, or an overlay.

Why it happens

When GTA V dies before its window appears, it often can't show an error at all. The launcher log usually just says the game 'did not create a window'. The common causes are damaged game files after an update, a corrupted settings file, a laptop using its weaker built-in graphics, or software hooking into the game as it starts.

How to fix it

  1. Verify the game files in Steam, Epic, or the Rockstar Games Launcher. This fixes a lot of these after big updates.
  2. Reset your settings: go to Documents\Rockstar Games (or OneDrive\Documents\Rockstar Games) and rename the 'GTAV Enhanced' folder (or 'GTA V' if you play the Legacy version) by adding '.old' to the end. Don't delete it. Your story mode saves are in its Profiles folder, so you can copy them back into the new folder the game creates.
  3. On a laptop, make sure GTA V uses the dedicated graphics card: Settings > System > Display > Graphics, pick GTA V, choose 'High performance'.
  4. Update your graphics driver, or do a clean install with DDU if you recently changed drivers.
  5. Turn off overlays (Steam, Discord, NVIDIA App) and close RivaTuner, recording software, and any mod menus or script tools.
  6. Make sure the game isn't set to run in compatibility mode: right-click PlayGTAV.exe > Properties > Compatibility, and untick 'Run this program in compatibility mode'.

Still broken?
