FiveM voice chat not working (can't hear others or no one hears you)

Fixable on your PC

Proximity voice isn't working on a FiveM server. If it's only you, it's almost always a Windows audio setting, a game voice setting, or the wrong mic or speaker selected. If everyone on the server has the problem, it's the server.

Why it happens

FiveM uses GTA V's voice chat settings and Windows' default audio devices. If Windows blocks mic access for desktop apps, the wrong device is set as default, voice chat is turned off in the game settings, or you're using a different push-to-talk key than the server expects, voice won't work. Busy servers can also have voice problems on their end.

How to fix it

  1. Check if it's just you: ask others nearby in-game (or in the server's Discord) if voice is working for them. If no one's voice works, it's a server problem. Tell staff and wait.
  2. Allow mic access: Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on 'Microphone access' and 'Let desktop apps access your microphone'.
  3. Set your default devices: right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar > Sound settings. Set your headset as both the default Output and Input device, and talk into it to check the input meter moves.
  4. In-game: press Esc > Settings > Voice Chat. Make sure Voice Chat and Microphone are enabled, the correct input and output devices are picked, and the voice volume isn't at zero.
  5. Check the push-to-talk key: GTA's default is N, but some servers use a different key. Check the server's Discord or rules for their voice key, and check in-game keybinds.
  6. Fully close FiveM (and Discord, if it's using your mic exclusively) and reopen it, then rejoin.

Still broken?

Try another server to confirm. If voice works elsewhere, the problem is that server's voice setup, so report it to its staff. If it fails everywhere, clear the FiveM cache and turn off 'Allow applications to take exclusive control' for your mic (Sound settings > your microphone > Properties > Advanced).
